How the two stages fit together

Layers: Daily Word Connections begins with four mini-games that each unlock a word. Those answers join twelve other words on a final board; you then identify four groups containing four words apiece. Everyone receives the same daily puzzle across the browser and mobile versions.[2]

The link between the stages is the important part. Our advice is to stay curious about an unlocked word’s other meanings, even after solving its mini-game. The way you obtained a word does not necessarily tell you which final category it belongs to.

What each Layers mini-game asks you to do

LetterLock

Find a five-letter word using feedback about correct, misplaced and absent letters.[1]

Anagram

Rearrange the supplied letters into a complete word; a shuffle can offer a different view.[1]

Crossword

Use crossing clues to work toward a central answer, with related clue themes sometimes helping.[1]

Word Search

Solve a clue, then locate its word horizontally, vertically or diagonally in the grid.[1]

Solving the final board without wasting guesses

Select four words that share the intended connection. A correct group is removed and its category is shown. Mistakes are limited; exhausting them ends the final board and reveals the remaining groups. The official instructions do not commit to a universal numeric mistake allowance.[1]

Before submitting, name the category in a precise sentence. “Things vaguely connected to travel” is a weak hypothesis; a narrowly defined relation is easier to test against all sixteen words. If a fifth word seems equally suitable, you have a reason to pause and reconsider the boundaries.

Read each candidate as more than one part of speech. A word that looks like a place or a name might also be a verb, an object or part of a phrase. You do not need to force an exotic interpretation immediately; keep alternatives available until the rest of the board supports one.

After one group is removed, make a fresh pass through the remaining words. Your first interpretation may have depended on a distractor that is no longer available. Starting the remaining problem again is often more productive than defending your original theory.

Browser play, app hints and Layers+

The browser provides the current daily puzzle without an installation or account. The publisher states that browser play has no hints, archive or Layers+ features. Its iPhone and Android apps offer hints and past puzzles, with some access through short videos and additional benefits through the optional Layers+ subscription.[2]

Layers+ is advertised for the full archive, ad removal, unlimited hints and streak protection. Keep those app benefits separate from the free browser puzzle when choosing where to play.[2]

If an expected purchase or feature is missing, use the publisher’s support page and identify your platform, app version and the affected puzzle. The support guidance distinguishes purchase platforms, so an app entitlement question should not be treated as a browser puzzle failure.[4]

What keeps a streak—and how to share a clean result

According to the official how-to page, playing the day’s puzzle maintains the streak even when the final board is not solved. Browser streaks and statistics stay in that browser; the apps support sign-in for saved account statistics. The game also supplies answer-free result sharing.[1]

Our suggestion is to share the result summary before discussing any unlocked words. A mini-game answer is also a piece of the final board, so revealing an apparently small early answer can remove part of a friend’s puzzle. If you want to compare approaches, talk about the formats you found hardest rather than naming the words.

Layers FAQ

Do I have to solve the mini-games in a particular order?

No. The official guide says they can be solved in any order.[1]

Does losing the final board break my streak?

The publisher says playing that day’s puzzle keeps the streak going, whether or not the final board is solved.[1]

Can I use hints and the archive in the browser?

The current browser edition does not include hints or past puzzles; the publisher lists those among app features.[2]
